As a teacher we sometimes forget what is like to be on the other side of the baton. Performing with Central Winds affords me the opportunity to keep that prospective. It also reminds me of the enjoyment and energy that come from being part of group with one goal.
The experiences I have had over the years with our conductors along with the guest conductors we have had through the Mid-West clinic experience are priceless.
For me the balance is more of family and performing, and having a supportive the family that enjoys the music as much as I do help tremendously.
I believe that I have become a much better teacher because of this group. To be able to play a wide array of literature has allowed me to introduce music to my kids at school that I might not have been aware of. To perform and rehearse under two great educators and conductors is much like attending a weekly clinic. It has improved my rehearsal technique. To be able to talk to colleagues has also been extremely valuable.
Both my wife and I are music educators and play in the group, my oldest daughter is a trombone performance major at Eastman and my youngest daughter plays in school. Music is somewhat a way of life and juggling the two I think might be easier for us than some others. It is what we do. I think it bonds us more that it takes away.
Being a performer and a teacher has been a part of my life for many years and balancing that with my family life has created some interesting challenges. I may not always be successful with that, but the benefits certainly outweigh the demands. Having a big calendar and writing everything down helps!!
I don't believe that I can be a successful teacher without being an active musician. What I do and learn as a performer directly influences what I teach my students. I've learned a great deal from the conductors that we've performed under and I've had some outstanding musical experiences with this group that I've been able to share with my students. I want my students to realize that music can be a lifelong source of enjoyment that doesn't have to end when they graduate from high school.
